About Gulpha
Gulpha is the marma of the ankle joint, encompassing the medial and lateral malleoli and the talocrural articulation between them. The Sushruta Samhita classifies it as a sandhi (joint) marma and notes that injury here results in stiffness, pain, and impaired locomotion. The ankle is the foundation of upright movement -- every step, every shift of balance, every transition from sitting to standing passes through this joint, which must simultaneously provide stability (supporting the body's full weight) and mobility (allowing the foot to adapt to uneven terrain).
The ankle is one of the most commonly injured joints in the body, and ankle sprains are the single most frequent musculoskeletal injury across all age groups and activity levels. What many people do not realize is that a sprained ankle that heals without proper rehabilitation leaves behind subtle instability, reduced proprioception (balance sense), and restricted range of motion that predispose to re-injury and begin the cascade of compensatory changes that eventually affect the knee, hip, and lower back. Gulpha therapy after ankle sprain is not merely about pain relief -- it is about preventing the chain of dysfunction that follows neglected ankle injury.
Therapeutic Applications
Ankle sprain rehabilitation, chronic ankle instability, ankle stiffness, ankle arthritis support, edema around the ankle, Achilles tendon conditions (accessed from the posterior ankle), balance and proprioception improvement, and Vata accumulation in the lower limbs
Technique
Cup the ankle with both hands, placing the thumbs on the anterior ankle and the fingers wrapping around the malleoli. Apply circular pressure with the thumbs around the entire circumference of the ankle joint, working in the grooves above, below, and between the malleoli. For post-sprain, focus on the anterior talofibular ligament (anterior and inferior to the lateral malleolus). Finish with gentle ankle circles -- hold the foot and rotate it clockwise and counterclockwise through its full range.
Pressure
Moderate. The ankle has many tendons, ligaments, and neurovascular structures close to the surface. Work in the joint spaces and around (not directly on) the bony malleoli. The areas behind and below the malleoli can receive deeper, sustained pressure.
Duration
5-8 minutes per ankle. For post-sprain rehabilitation, daily treatment of 5-10 minutes combined with progressive balance exercises. For chronic stiffness, include as part of a daily pada abhyanga (foot massage) routine.
Oil Recommendation
Dhanvantaram oil for chronic ankle stiffness and osteoarthritis. Mahanarayan oil for post-sprain rehabilitation and inflammation. Warm sesame oil for daily Vata pacification. For acute ankle swelling, apply cool Chandanadi oil with gentle upward strokes.
Contraindications & Cautions
Avoid deep pressure during acute ankle fracture or if fracture is suspected (inability to bear weight after injury). Contraindicated during the acute inflammatory phase of a severe sprain (first 48-72 hours -- use RICE protocol instead). Use caution with individuals who have posterior tibial tendon dysfunction. Avoid vigorous mobilization with ankle joint arthrodesis (fusion).

Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the Gulpha marma point located?
The Gulpha marma point (Gulpha, meaning "The Ankle, The Knot of the Leg") is located at at the ankle joint, encompassing the medial and lateral malleoli (the bony prominences on either side of the ankle) and the talocrural joint space. It is a Sandhi (joint) type point in the lower limbs region, with a size of 2 anguli (finger-widths).
How do you stimulate the Gulpha marma point?
Cup the ankle with both hands, placing the thumbs on the anterior ankle and the fingers wrapping around the malleoli. Apply circular pressure with the thumbs around the entire circumference of the ankle joint, working in the grooves above, below, and The recommended pressure is: moderate. the ankle has many tendons, ligaments, and neurovascular structures close to the surface. work in the joint spaces and around (not directly
What are the therapeutic benefits of Gulpha marma?
Gulpha marma therapy is used for: Ankle sprain rehabilitation, chronic ankle instability, ankle stiffness, ankle arthritis support, edema around the ankle, Achilles tendon conditions (accessed from the posterior ankle), balance and proprioception improvement, and Vata accumulation in. It is associated with the Muladhara (Root) chakra and the Earth (Prithvi) and Water (Jala) element.
Which dosha is associated with Gulpha marma point?
Gulpha is primarily associated with Vata. Its connected organ is kidneys, bladder, reproductive organs, and it relates to the Muladhara (Root) chakra. Stimulation of this point helps balance the associated dosha when done with appropriate oils and pressure.
What oils should I use on the Gulpha marma point?
Dhanvantaram oil for chronic ankle stiffness and osteoarthritis. Mahanarayan oil for post-sprain rehabilitation and inflammation. Warm sesame oil for daily Vata pacification. For acute ankle swelling, apply cool Chandanadi oil with gentle upward strokes. Always choose oils suited to your constitution and current state of balance.
