Bhava

भाव

Pronunciation: BHAH-vah

Also spelled: Bhaava

House; state of being; condition

Jyotish

Bhava means “house” in Jyotish - one of the twelve divisions of the chart that represent different areas of life. Each bhava governs specific life themes: self, wealth, siblings, mother, children, enemies, partnership, transformation, fortune, career, gains, and liberation.

The bhavas are numbered from the ascendant (lagna), which marks the first house. Planets placed in a house influence that life area; the lord of each house carries its themes wherever it goes in the chart. House placement reveals where planetary energies manifest in life.

The twelve bhavas are grouped into: angular houses (1, 4, 7, 10) called kendras, trinal houses (1, 5, 9) called trikonas, growth houses (3, 6, 11) called upachayas, and difficult houses (6, 8, 12) called dusthanas. Understanding house meanings is essential for chart interpretation.
