Dasha

दशा

Pronunciation: DAH-shah

Also spelled: Dasa, Dashaa

Planetary period; state; condition of life

Jyotish

Dasha is the planetary period system unique to Jyotish - a method for predicting when different life themes will manifest. The most common system, Vimshottari Dasha, assigns specific year lengths to each planet, creating a 120-year cycle that unfolds from birth.

Each planet’s dasha activates the themes of that planet based on its natal placement. During Saturn dasha, Saturnian themes (discipline, limitation, maturation) dominate; during Venus dasha, Venusian themes (relationships, creativity, comfort) come forward. The condition of the ruling planet determines whether its period brings benefit or challenge.

Dashas have major periods (mahadasha) and sub-periods (antardasha, pratyantar, etc.) that create layers of timing. This system allows Jyotish to make specific predictions about life phases - something not possible with Western progressions or transits alone.
