Nakshatra
नक्षत्र
Pronunciation: nuk-SHAH-trah
Also spelled: Nakshtra
Lunar mansion; star; that which does not decay
JyotishNakshatras are the 27 lunar mansions - divisions of the zodiac based on the Moon’s daily movement through the sky. Each nakshatra spans 13°20’ and has its own deity, symbol, ruling planet, and characteristics that add nuance to chart interpretation.
While rashis (signs) describe the general environment, nakshatras reveal deeper layers of meaning. The Moon’s nakshatra at birth is particularly important, revealing emotional nature, instinctive patterns, and the quality of mind. The nakshatra of any planet adds specific coloring to its expression.
The nakshatras are used for: muhurta (electional astrology), determining compatible partners, understanding psychological patterns, and calculating dasha periods. They represent an older layer of Indian astronomy, predating the twelve-sign zodiac, and remain central to Jyotish practice.
