Ayurveda

Rasa has multiple related meanings in Ayurveda. As taste, it refers to the six tastes (shadrasa): sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter, and astringent. Each taste has specific effects on the doshas and tissues. As tissue, rasa dhatu is the first of the seven tissues - the plasma and lymph that nourish all other tissues.

The connection between these meanings is significant: the rasa (taste) of food becomes rasa (plasma) after digestion, which then nourishes all subsequent tissues. This is why taste is so important in Ayurveda - it directly influences tissue formation and dosha balance.

Rasa also means essence or juice - the vital fluid that carries nourishment. Healthy rasa dhatu manifests as: good skin hydration, contentment, and a sense of satisfaction after eating. Depleted rasa causes: dry skin, dissatisfaction, and poor nourishment of deeper tissues.
