Sutra

सूत्र

Pronunciation: SOO-trah

Also spelled: Sootra

Thread; aphorism; condensed teaching

Yoga

Sutra literally means thread - a condensed statement that strings together essential teachings. The sutra form was designed for oral transmission, when teachings had to be memorized. Each sutra packs maximum meaning into minimum words.

Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras contain 196 sutras organized into four chapters (padas). Each sutra is dense with meaning, requiring commentary to unfold. This is why the sutras are traditionally studied with a teacher who can explain the layers of interpretation and practical application.

The sutra style requires contemplation. A single sutra like yogash chitta vritti nirodhah (1.2) can be studied for years, revealing deeper meanings as practice matures. The brevity forces engagement rather than passive reading - you must wrestle with the sutra to extract its teaching.
