About CV-17 Chest Center

CV-17 Shanzhong is the front-mu point of the Pericardium, the hui-meeting point of qi, and one of the Sea of Qi points, giving it authority over the gathering qi (zong qi) that resides in the chest and powers both respiration and circulation. Located at the center of the sternum between the nipples, it sits at the body's emotional and energetic heart center -- the place where grief constricts, anxiety tightens, and joy expands.

Gathering qi (zong qi) is formed from the combination of air qi (inhaled by the Lung) and food qi (produced by the Spleen). It accumulates in the chest and drives two fundamental functions: the Lung's respiration and the Heart's circulation of blood. When zong qi is strong, breathing is deep and effortless, the voice is strong, and the heartbeat is steady. When it weakens or stagnates, the chest feels tight, breathing becomes shallow, the voice weakens, and a pervasive sense of oppression or anxiety settles in.

Shanzhong's role as the hui-meeting point of qi means it is the most influential single point for treating qi disorders anywhere in the body, particularly those manifesting in the chest. For self-care, it is the point most people discover naturally when they press their hand to their chest during moments of emotional distress. The instinct to touch the chest center during grief, anxiety, or breathlessness is a universal human gesture that validates the millennia-old recognition of Shanzhong as the body's emotional-respiratory nexus.

How to Find This Point

Find the center of the chest on the breastbone, at the level of the nipples. In women, find the midpoint of the sternum at the fourth rib level. The point is on the bone itself, at the body's emotional center.

Technique

Press with the thumb or two fingertips on the center of the sternum. Moderate pressure or gentle circular motions. Rubbing the sternum up and down can also effectively stimulate this area. Combine with deep breathing for best effect.

Pressure & Duration

Moderate pressure for 2-3 minutes.

Benefits

Regulates qi in the chest, opens the chest, benefits the diaphragm, unbinds the chest, descends Lung qi, promotes lactation, calms the spirit

Indications

Chest tightness, asthma, chest pain, shortness of breath, anxiety with chest constriction, insufficient lactation, hiccup, difficulty swallowing, cough

Self-Care Use

Press or rub the center of the chest (breastbone at nipple level) for chest tightness, anxiety, shallow breathing, and emotional constriction. This is the 'Sea of Qi' in the chest, where gathering qi (zong qi) accumulates. When you feel emotionally constricted or unable to take a full breath, pressing here while breathing deeply opens the chest and releases the bound qi. Also useful for hiccups. 2-3 minutes with deep breathing.

Contraindications & Cautions

Avoid deep pressure directly on the sternum in individuals with osteoporosis or sternal fracture. Use gentle pressure only. Do not press if there is acute chest pain of cardiac origin -- seek emergency care.
