About CV-4 Gate of Origin

CV-4 Guanyuan is one of the most important tonification points in Chinese medicine, located at the body's energetic center of gravity where original qi (yuan qi) is stored and distributed. The name 'Gate of Origin' marks this point as the gateway to the body's most fundamental energy -- the constitutional vitality inherited from the parents at conception that determines the strength and duration of a person's life.

As the front-mu point of the Small Intestine and the meeting point of the Conception Vessel with the three leg yin meridians (Spleen, Liver, Kidney), Guanyuan serves as a nexus where the body's deepest yin and yang resources are accessible. The Kidney stores original qi, the Spleen and Liver produce and regulate postnatal qi and blood, and the Conception Vessel (Ren Mai) governs all yin in the body. Stimulating their meeting point simultaneously tonifies all three systems.

In the Daoist internal cultivation tradition, the area around CV-4 is called the lower dantian -- the 'elixir field' where vital essence is stored, refined, and transformed. Meditation practices that focus awareness on this point are said to replenish original qi and reverse the natural depletion of jing (essence) that drives the aging process. For therapeutic self-care, gentle warmth applied to Guanyuan -- whether through warm hands, moxibustion, or heated compresses -- is one of the most nourishing practices available, particularly for individuals depleted by chronic illness, overwork, or childbirth.

How to Find This Point

Measure four finger-widths directly below the navel on the midline of the lower abdomen. The point is at that level, approximately halfway between the navel and the top of the pubic bone.

Technique

Lie on your back with knees bent. Press gently but deeply with two or three fingertips on the midline. Sustained pressure with gradual deepening, or slow clockwise circular motions. The abdomen should remain relaxed. Warmth (warm hands, warm compress) enhances the effect.

Benefits

Tonifies original qi, nourishes yin and blood, benefits the uterus and Kidneys, regulates menstruation, strengthens the body's foundation, warms the Lower Jiao

Self-Care Use

This is the seat of original qi (yuan qi) -- the body's constitutional energy inherited at birth. Gentle, warm pressure here is deeply restorative. Apply a warm compress or place warm hands on the lower abdomen after pressing for enhanced effect. Best practiced lying down in a quiet environment. Avoid during pregnancy.

Contraindications & Cautions

Avoid during pregnancy. Do not press deeply on a full stomach or bladder. Use gentle pressure in cases of acute abdominal pain of unknown origin.
