About GV-26 Water Trough

GV-26 Renzhong is the most important emergency acupuncture point in Chinese medicine, serving as the primary intervention for loss of consciousness, collapse, and acute shock. Its location in the philtrum -- the groove between the nose and upper lip -- makes it easily accessible even when a patient is unconscious, and its powerful effect on arousal and consciousness can produce immediate results.

The name Renzhong means 'center of the person,' and in classical thought this point represents the junction between heaven (above, represented by the nose as the opening for heavenly qi/breath) and earth (below, represented by the mouth as the opening for earthly nourishment/food). When consciousness collapses, the connection between heaven and earth is severed. Stimulating Renzhong at the midpoint restores this connection, reviving the spirit and returning the person to awareness.

The point sits on the Governing Vessel, which governs all yang and runs up the spine to the brain. By powerfully stimulating yang at this accessible facial point, the practitioner can send a surge of activating energy upward into the brain. Modern understanding suggests the intense sensory stimulation at this nerve-rich location activates the reticular activating system, the brainstem network responsible for consciousness and arousal. In emergency situations -- fainting, heatstroke, seizure, shock -- pressing GV-26 firmly with the fingernail while calling for medical help is a first-aid measure taught across East Asian cultures.

How to Find This Point

Find the vertical groove between the base of the nose and the upper lip (the philtrum). The point is one-third of the way down from the nose, or two-thirds of the way up from the lip, in the center of that groove.

Technique

Press firmly upward with the fingernail or fingertip into the philtrum groove, angling toward the base of the nose. Brief, strong stimulation. For emergency resuscitation, press firmly with the edge of the thumbnail.

Pressure & Duration

Firm (brief, sharp stimulation for emergencies) pressure for 30 seconds to 1 minute for acute situations; 1-2 minutes for chronic conditions.

Benefits

Restores consciousness, rescues yang, calms the spirit, benefits the spine, clears the brain

Self-Care Use

Press firmly in the groove between the nose and upper lip to quickly restore alertness if feeling faint, lightheaded, or mentally foggy. This is the primary emergency acupressure point for consciousness disturbance. Press firmly upward with the fingernail for 30 seconds when someone faints. For self-use, brief firm pressure here can help clear sudden dizziness or the foggy feeling that precedes fainting.

Contraindications & Cautions

Avoid strong pressure if there is a skin lesion or infection in the philtrum. Use proportionally gentle pressure in infants and children.
