About HT-3 Lesser Sea

HT-3 Shaohai is the he-sea point of the Heart meridian, where the channel's qi runs deepest and most interior-connected. As a Water point on a Fire meridian, it has the specific ability to cool and calm excessive Heart fire -- the pathological heat that in TCM produces anxiety, insomnia, agitation, manic behavior, and palpitations. Water controls Fire in the five-element cycle, and this elemental relationship is embedded in Shaohai's therapeutic action.

The Heart in TCM houses the shen (spirit/mind), and disturbances of the shen produce the full spectrum of mental-emotional symptoms: anxiety, insomnia, poor concentration, emotional volatility, and in severe cases, confused speech and manic episodes. When fire or phlegm-fire obstructs the Heart, the shen becomes unsettled. Shaohai addresses both mechanisms -- clearing heat and transforming the phlegm that can congeal from prolonged heat, blocking the Heart's orifices and clouding consciousness.

The name 'Lesser Sea' reflects both the he-sea point designation and the shaoyin (lesser yin) nature of the Heart meridian. It is a deep, quiet point that draws excess energy downward, much as water naturally flows to the lowest point. Clinically, it is particularly valued for conditions where anxiety manifests physically -- racing pulse, chest tightness, trembling hands -- as well as for medial elbow pain along the Heart channel pathway.

How to Find This Point

Bend the elbow fully. Find the inner end of the elbow crease, in the depression just in front of the bony bump on the inner elbow (medial epicondyle). The point is between the tendon and the bone.

Technique

Press with the thumb into the depression at the inner elbow crease. Moderate, sustained pressure. The area may feel sensitive or produce a tingling sensation down the forearm toward the little finger.

Pressure & Duration

Moderate pressure for 1-2 minutes per side.

Calms the spirit, clears Heart fire, transforms phlegm obstructing the Heart orifices, activates the channel, benefits the elbow

Indications

Anxiety, palpitations, insomnia, tremors, elbow pain, numbness in the forearm and hand, depression, mania, poor memory, cardiac pain

TCM Actions

Calms the spirit, clears Heart fire, transforms phlegm-fire harassing the Heart, activates the channel, he-sea point of the Heart meridian

Self-Care Use

This is a Water point on a Fire meridian, meaning it specifically cools excess fire in the Heart that causes restlessness and insomnia. Gentle to moderate pressure for 1-2 minutes per side.

Contraindications & Cautions

Avoid pressing directly on the ulnar nerve if it produces electric shock sensations. Use gentle pressure if there is medial epicondylitis (golfer's elbow).
