About LI-11 Pool at the Crook

LI-11 Quchi is the he-sea point of the Large Intestine meridian and one of the most powerful heat-clearing points in the entire acupuncture system. Where qi gathers deeply at he-sea points, Quchi channels the abundant qi and blood of the yangming system to cool, drain, and resolve pathological heat wherever it lodges in the body. It is the primary point for skin diseases of all kinds, high fevers, and inflammatory conditions.

The name 'Pool at the Crook' describes the depression at the elbow crease where qi collects like water in a pool. This imagery captures both the point's location and its cooling, fluid nature. Just as a pool of water naturally cools what is immersed in it, Quchi cools the blood and tissues, resolving the redness, swelling, itching, and inflammation that characterize heat conditions.

Clinically, Quchi stands alongside LI-4 Hegu as one of the two most important points on the Large Intestine meridian. While Hegu excels at releasing the exterior and moving qi, Quchi excels at clearing interior heat and resolving toxic accumulation. For skin conditions -- eczema, hives, acne, psoriasis -- Quchi is nearly always included in treatment protocols because of its direct action on blood-heat, which TCM considers the root of most inflammatory skin disease. Modern research has also shown the point to have measurable effects on immune modulation and blood pressure regulation.
