About LR-3 Great Surge

LR-3 Taichong is the yuan-source point of the Liver meridian and one of the most clinically important points in the entire acupuncture system. The Liver governs the smooth flow of qi throughout the body, and when this function is impaired -- by stress, emotional suppression, frustration, or hormonal fluctuation -- the resulting stagnation produces the vast constellation of symptoms associated with Liver qi stagnation: irritability, sighing, chest and rib tightness, headache, digestive disturbance, menstrual irregularity, and depression.

The name 'Great Surge' captures the dynamic, forceful quality of Liver qi when it flows properly. The Liver is associated with spring, with the rising energy of wood pushing through the earth, with the assertive, creative drive that moves life forward. When this surge is blocked, everything stagnates; when Taichong is pressed, it releases the blockage and restores the forward flow. The sensation at the point often mirrors the clinical picture -- in someone with significant Liver qi stagnation, pressing LR-3 produces a strong, almost electric ache that spreads through the foot and up the leg.

When paired with LI-4 Hegu on the hand, the combination is called the 'Four Gates' (Si Guan) -- two points on the hands, two on the feet, together opening all the major qi pathways in the body. This is the most powerful combination for moving stagnant qi and is used for virtually any condition where qi flow is blocked. For self-care, pressing these four points (both LI-4 and both LR-3) for 2-3 minutes each is a comprehensive stress-relief practice that can be done anywhere.

How to Find This Point

On the top of the foot, find the groove between the bones leading to the big toe and second toe. Slide your finger up that groove toward the ankle until you hit a bony junction where the two metatarsal bases meet. The point is in the depression just before that junction.

Technique

Press firmly with the thumb into the groove between the first and second metatarsal bones. Sustained deep pressure or press-and-release technique. The point frequently produces a strong, spreading ache when Liver qi is stagnant.

Pressure & Duration

Firm pressure for 2-3 minutes per side.

Self-Care Use

Press firmly between the big toe and second toe bones on the top of the foot for stress, frustration, anger, headache, and PMS. This is the most important point for moving stuck emotional energy. When you feel wound up, irritable, or unable to relax, press LR-3 firmly for 2-3 minutes per side. Combined with LI-4, the pair ('Four Gates') opens the flow of qi through the entire body.

Contraindications & Cautions

Use with caution during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester. Avoid very aggressive pressure in individuals with severe bleeding disorders.
