About ST-25 Celestial Pivot

ST-25 Tianshu is the front-mu (alarm) point of the Large Intestine, making it the single most important point for regulating bowel function. Its location beside the navel places it at what TCM considers the division between the upper and lower body -- the 'celestial pivot' around which the body's qi rotates. Above the navel, qi ascends (governed by heaven); below the navel, qi descends (governed by earth). Tianshu sits at this fulcrum, able to redirect qi in either direction as needed.

This pivotal location gives Tianshu a remarkable bidirectional effect on the bowels: it can resolve both constipation and diarrhea, depending on the underlying pattern. When the intestines are stagnant with heat or dryness, stimulating Tianshu promotes movement and moisture. When the intestines are hyperactive from cold or dampness, Tianshu firms and regulates. This adaptogenic quality -- treating opposite conditions with the same point -- is a hallmark of mu points and reflects the body's innate intelligence to use therapeutic stimulus for self-correction.

In modern clinical practice, Tianshu is a foundation point for treating irritable bowel syndrome, chronic constipation, and inflammatory bowel conditions. Research has demonstrated measurable effects on intestinal motility, gut microbiome balance, and visceral pain thresholds when this point is stimulated. For self-care, gentle abdominal massage centered on Tianshu is one of the most accessible and effective daily health practices in the TCM tradition.

How to Find This Point

Place two fingers side by side (index and middle finger) horizontally next to your navel. The point is at the outer edge of those two fingers, directly beside the belly button on each side. It lies in the rectus abdominis muscle.
