About ST-36 Leg Three Miles
ST-36 Zusanli is universally regarded as the most important acupuncture point in the body for building vitality, strengthening digestion, and promoting longevity. Its name, 'Leg Three Miles,' originates from the tradition that stimulating this point gives a weary traveler the energy to walk three more li (a Chinese unit of distance). Soldiers and laborers historically pressed or applied moxa to Zusanli to sustain themselves through grueling physical demands.
As the he-sea point of the Stomach meridian and a point of the Earth element on an Earth meridian, Zusanli embodies the generative, nourishing quality of Earth in its purest form. The Stomach and Spleen together form the 'root of postnatal qi' in TCM -- meaning all the energy the body produces after birth comes from the digestive system's ability to extract essence from food. Zusanli is the master access point for this entire system. Stimulating it strengthens digestion, improves nutrient absorption, builds qi and blood, raises sunken yang, and supports immune function.
The breadth of research on ST-36 exceeds that of any other acupuncture point. Studies have demonstrated its effects on gastric motility, immune cell activity, anti-inflammatory pathways, blood pressure regulation, pain modulation, and neuroplasticity. In traditional practice, daily moxibustion on Zusanli was prescribed as a longevity practice -- the Japanese saying 'Do not travel with a person who has not burned moxa on Zusanli' reflects the deep cultural conviction that this point sustains life force itself.
