In Ayurveda, how we combine foods matters as much as what we eat. Some combinations support digestion while others create ama (toxins). Select two foods to check their compatibility.

Key Food Combining Rules

Avoid

  • Milk + Sour Fruit - Citrus, berries with milk causes curdling
  • Milk + Banana - Heavy, channel-clogging combination
  • Milk + Fish - Strongly incompatible, creates toxicity
  • Fruit + Any Meal - Fruit ferments when combined
  • Melon + Anything - Melons must be eaten alone
  • Heated Honey - Becomes toxic when cooked or in hot drinks
  • Cold Drinks + Meals - Extinguishes digestive fire
  • Yogurt at Night - Increases kapha, clogs channels

Good Combinations

  • Grains + Legumes - Complete protein, traditional combination
  • Grains + Vegetables - Easy to digest, balanced
  • Grains + Ghee - Enhances nutrition, supports agni
  • Rice + Milk - Traditional, nourishing combination
  • Cooked Veg + Protein - Generally compatible
  • Warm Drinks + Meals - Supports digestive fire
  • Spices + Most Foods - Enhance digestibility

Practical Guidelines

Eat Fruit Alone

Consume fruit on an empty stomach, 30 minutes before meals or 2-3 hours after. Fruit digests quickly and ferments when held up by other foods.

Simplify Meals

The more components in a meal, the more opportunity for problematic combinations. Simple meals with few ingredients are easier to digest.

Consider Your Agni

Those with strong digestive fire can handle more challenging combinations. If your digestion is weak, follow these rules more strictly.

Observe Effects

Notice how you feel after eating. Gas, bloating, sluggishness, and brain fog indicate problematic combinations. Lightness and energy indicate good combining.
