The Elder Futhark

The 24 runes of the Elder Futhark are divided into three groups of eight called aettir (families), each governed by a Norse deity. Rune casting dates back to at least the 2nd century CE, with Tacitus describing Germanic priests casting marked staves onto a white cloth and reading them as messages from the gods.

Freya's Aett

Runes 1-8. The primal forces: wealth, strength, boundaries, wisdom, journeys, fire, gifts, and joy.

Heimdall's Aett

Runes 9-16. The challenges of becoming: disruption, need, stillness, harvest, mystery, protection, and the sun.

Tyr's Aett

Runes 17-24. The runes of mastery: honor, growth, intuition, home, communication, breakthrough, heritage, and completion.

When a rune is drawn reversed (upside-down), its meaning shifts to shadow aspects or blocked energy. The exception is Odin's Rune, where the single draw is taken as absolute — the rune speaks without qualification.
